Texans Knock Off Jaguars

POSTED: Sunday, October 22, 2006

(Sports Network) - David Carr completed 25-of-34 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns, as the Houston Texans stunned the Jacksonville Jaguars with a 27-7 victory at Reliant Stadium.

Andre Johnson hauled in eight passes for 106 yards and a touchdown for the Texans, who scored 14 points off turnovers.

Wali Lundy, who was inactive last week, ran for 93 yards on 19 attempts and scored a touchdown for Houston (2-4), which outgained Jacksonville in total yards, 349-220.

"When we play Jacksonville, we always play with a lot of confidence," Carr said. "In the past couple of years, we've matched up against them very well. If we can find a way to run the ball a little bit like we did today and get some yards on the ground, we can do what we want to do, and get to the perimeter and make some plays outside."

Byron Leftwich, who came into the game with a sore left ankle, went 14-for-28 for 125 yards, as the Jaguars (3-3) looked sluggish after coming off their bye week.

Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio said he thought about pulling Leftwich out of the game in the second half

"I thought he was struggling and I thought that to start the second half," Del Rio said. "I know he's incredibly tough, but he's not going to ever say anything, not going to ever admit it."

Fred Taylor ran for 84 yards but lost a key fumble in the third quarter that led to seven points for Houston.

After a scoreless opening quarter, the Texans struck first early in the second after Johnson made a 35-yard reception to give Houston a 7-0 lead. Johnson's leaping grab over two defenders along the left side of the end zone, capped a 12-play, 81-yard march that spanned almost 5 1/2 minutes as Carr threw for 63 yards on the drive.

Carr and Texans put together another long drive and scored late in the second quarter to take a 10-0 lead into the locker room. Kris Brown converted a 43- yard field goal with 1:10 left in the first half to highlight an 11-play, 51 yard drive that totaled almost five minutes.

Jacksonville's offense was out of sync in the first half totaling just 71 yards of offense.

Trailing by 10 at the half, the Jaguars stormed out of the gate in the third quarter, scoring a touchdown on their first offensive possession.

Maurice Jones-Drew plunged in from one-yard out to make it 10-7 with 9:20 left in the third. Jacksonville marched 70 yards on nine plays during the drive and Taylor ripped off a 32-yard run up the middle to put the Jags on Houston's 22.

Late in the third quarter with the Jaguars driving, Taylor coughed up the ball and Mario Williams recovered for the Texans at their own 22.

"I should have had two hands on it, but he (Antwan Peek) got his hand in there and made a good play," Taylor said. "From there you think to yourself hopefully some of your teammates are there to recover the ball for you, but then you feel helpless when you don't see anyone around."

Houston converted the turnover into points as Lundy rammed it in from two yards out to extend the lead to 17-7 with ll:32 left in the contest. Lundy set the score up after rumbling down the left sideline for 29 yards, putting the Texans at the Jacksonville 15.

Houston came up with another strong defensive play on Jacksonville's next offensive possession following Lundy's score. After a reception, Ernest Wilford was stripped of the ball by Demarcus Faggins, who scooped up the loose ball and ran it to the Jacksonville 26.

The Texans once again capitalized off the turnover as Carr found Owen Daniels in the middle of the end zone for a 14-yard TD pass to make it 24-7 with just under 10 minutes left in the contest.

Houston iced the win late after Brown chipped a 21-yard field goal through the uprights to make it 27-7 with just 3:12 to play.

"We have a lot of challenges as a football team and one of our challenges is the third quarter and the second half," Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said. "There's more challenges to come, but as long as we understand what they are and have players step up and face those things, then we're going to work our way through this and become a good football team. Leadership does that for you."
