5-Year-Old Gets Voter Registration Application In Mail

POSTED: Wednesday, September 17, 2008

A Jacksonville woman said she recently opened her mailbox to find voter registration documents addressed to her son -- a kindergarten student who won't be old enough to vote for another 12 years.

Meegan Suggs said she became suspicious when information with the header "Voter Registration Documents Enclosed" arrived in the mail for her son Taylor.

"It said across the top voter registration documents enclosed. I'm like, 'What in the world,'" Suggs said.

Taylor is almost 6-years-old. He barely knows who's running for president, and he certainly isn't old enough to vote.

Inside the document mailed to the child were large bold letters that read, 'Register to vote today.' It included a one-page application that was already partially filled out.

Taylor's mom said she thought it was real because it looked real and the return address on papers said Division of Elections in Tallahassee. However, when she looked at the front, she realized it was addressed to her son, who legally can't vote for 12 more years.

"I was just shocked to receive this in the mail after what happened in 2000 with all the accusations of voter fraud and then they're sending this out to my son who's only five," Suggs said.

The Supervisor of Elections Office handles voter registration in Duval County. The Supervisor of Elections Office told Channel 4 applications are only mailed to adults over age 18 who ask for them, and what Taylor received in the mail definitely didn't come from their office.

The 5-year-old's mother said she takes voting seriously and one day will sit down with her son and talk about it. In the mean time, she said wants to get the word out to other parents so they can keep an eye on what their kids receive in the mail.

The Supervisor of Elections Office said anything that comes from its office will have the name of the supervisor of elections, who is Jerry Holland in Duval County. Official registration documents in Duval County will also have a return of 105 E. Monroe St.

Anyone with questions or concerns about voter documentation received in the mail can call 904-630-1414.
