JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A coalition of national civil rights organizations has announced they'll monitor Tuesday's Florida primary voting in about 60 precincts in five counties, including Duval.Election Protection, a group that includes People For The American Way, the NAACP and the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, said they will use volunteer poll monitors and on-call attorneys in Duval, Broward, Miami-Dade, Orange and Leon counties to "ensure a fair and honest election."The group has set up a hotline -- (866) OUR-VOTE -- where volunteer lawyers and law students trained on Florida election law will be available to answer questions. Voters or poll worker noticing irregularities are also encouraged to call the hotline with information.
"This will be a trial run for the massive Election Protection effort in Florida and at least 16 other states in November," People For the American Way Foundation President Ralph G. Neas said.On Election Day, poll monitors wearing Election Protection T-shirts will be stationed at selected precincts in Leon, Duval, Broward, Orange and Miami-Dade counties to assist voters and distribute the bilingual "Voter's Bill of Rights."
