Many campaign signs still standing after election day

Supervisor of elections says signs must come down

DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. – It's been more than a week since Duval County's election day, but one might wonder why so many campaign signs are still standing.

The supervisor of elections said those signs must come down. Jerry Holland said his office has made the process of collecting all those signs a bit easier this year.

Holland said there can be a slew of reasons why a particular candidate's political sign is still posted. The placard is in a precarious place or a spot sporting a sign is between property owners.

Holland said the key to getting all the signs removed is making sure the candidates even know the signs are there.

"What happens a lot of times is the candidates actually will forget where they put their signs," Holland said.

Holland said no matter the reason, the signs are still there and the local statute says seven days after the election, the signs must be removed or candidates face a city fine.

News4Jax found a sign off the Arlington Expressway and it was from last summer's elections.

"There was a lot of fines in this election for illegal signs in many places where they put signs where they shouldn't have. So code enforcement did a pretty good job of, really, slapping the fines on people," Holland said.

Whether or not a candidate won their race, News4Jax found signs posted for just about every name people saw on their ballot. But often the placards are posted by volunteers and supporters.

Holland said this year, a new online tool should make it easier to get these out of the ground.

"We asked people to go to our elections website, to our Facebook page and actually post the sign that you see somewhere with the address, because we're Facebook friends with many of the candidates and maybe they're not aware of where the signs are," Holland said.

If you see campaign signs still posted, the easiest thing to do is call 630-CITY to let code enforcement know where they are.
