Nancy Shaver unseats St. Augustine mayor

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – St. Augustine voters elected Nancy Shaver over incumbent Mayor Joe Boles by just over 100 votes.

Boles, who served as mayor for eight years, was defeated by Shaver, who ran on a platform of focusing on providing core services to residents.

"I am incredibly delighted and humbled and so grateful for everyone who voted for me and for everyone who lives here in the city, It is a magical place," Shaver said. "Together we are going to make it even more magical."

Shaver said one of her first tasks will be a re-examination of how the city will celebrate its 450th anniversary next year.

"We've spent a lot of money on the 450th, but what residents are looking for is, 'What's in it for them?' What is the celebration residents can have? It's our birthday," Shaver.

Boles said he was leaving office proud of his service.

"I've had eight years as the mayor of the most unique city of America, and that has been my pleasure," Boles. "Would I like to do it two more years? Obviously I would run for mayor again, for the people who have worked so hard for this campaign -- most of them worked harder than me -- because they were doing it for purely the love for the city, and I appreciate them."

St. Augustine voters on Tuesday also returned Nancy Sikes-Kline to another term in city commission seat 5 and elected Todd Neville to fill seat 4.

St. Johns County voters elected Jay Morris to another term in county commission, district 4.
