Obama's lead within sampling error in average of polls

The day before the presidential election, an average of the eight national polls released Sunday and Monday indicates the race for the White House is all knotted up.

A CNN Poll of Polls compiled and released Monday afternoon indicates President Barack Obama at 49% and Republican nominee Mitt Romney at 48% among likely voters nationwide.

The CNN Poll of Polls is an average of eight live operator, non-partisan, national polls of likely voters conducted over the past week: CNN/ORC (Nov. 2-4); Gallup Daily Tracking (Nov. 1-4); NBC News/Wall Street Journal (Nov. 1-3); American Research Group (Nov. 2-4); Monmouth University (Nov. 1-4); ABC News/Washington Post tracking poll (Oct. 31-Nov. 3); Politico/George Washington Univ. (Oct. 29-Nov. 1); and Pew Research Center (Oct. 31-Nov. 3).

Since the CNN Poll of Polls is an average of multiple surveys, it does not have a sampling error. But the president's one point margin is well within the sampling errors of the surveys averaged into the poll of polls.
