State Rep. Travis Hutson, R-Elkton, added $80,625 in campaign cash in December as he runs in a special election to replace former Sen. John Thrasher, a St. Augustine Republican who resigned in November to become president of Florida State University.

A finance report filed Monday shows that Hutson contributed $50,000 of the $80,625. In all, Hutson had raised $236,825 as of Dec. 31, according to the report. In earlier months, Hutson had loaned $150,000 to the campaign account. He spent $224,906 in December, bringing his overall spending total to $288,460.

Hutson is competing with two other Republicans, including Rep. Ronald "Doc" Renuart, R-Ponte Vedra Beach, in a Jan. 27 primary in Senate District 6.  Updated finance totals for Renuart had not been posted on the state Division of Elections website early Monday evening.

The third Republican candidate, Dennis McDonald, had not raised any money as of Dec. 31 but had loaned his campaign $6,300.

The winner of the primary will face Daytona Beach Democrat David Cox in the April 7 special general election. Cox had raised a total of $150 as of Dec. 31.

Senate District 6 includes St. Johns, Flagler and Putnam counties and part of Volusia County.
