We all, at times, are guilty of sitting on the sidelines not getting involved when we see or hear something we'd like to see changed. For students in Duval County who participate in cross country, golf, tennis, JV Soccer, slow pitch softball, wrestling, and middle school football, thank goodness that's not the case this time. Not long ago the idea enough money could be raised to save these sports in the Duval County Schools was met with skepticism. Difficult budget decisions forced the move. Today, more than $470,000 has been raised, and for the kids who play these sports, the season will go as scheduled.
We'd like to commend all who donated. But more than that, we want to make special mention of those who stepped up and led this fundraising effort. My son's teacher often tells her students "when you believe in yourself, anything is possible." A dedicated group of our friends and neighbors believed something was important and did something that six months ago seemed impossible. They didn't sit on the sidelines. Channel 4 salutes your efforts. It's an important lesson we should all remember.
