Support your Jacksonville Jaguars going into its new era
Grasp the opportunity to support your local team
We knew this day was coming. It wasn't a secret Wayne and Delores Weaver were, as Mr. Weaver put it, looking for an exit strategy. So the announcement the Jaguars were sold shouldn't surprise anyone. But the timing has left many asking what it all means.
We find ourselves at the most critical point in the Jaguar's franchise history. And so we have a decision to make, and we need to make it fast. How bad do we really want to keep our NFL franchise?
Shahid Khan by most accounts is the right guy. He's told Mr. Weaver he intends to keep the team in Jacksonville -- the critical point in Mr. Weaver making the deal so quickly. But let's be real. No successful businessman is going to spend nearly $800 million for a franchise whose fan support is teetering at best. That would be bad business. It will be much easier for the new owner to sever ties with a city that doesn't buy tickets. The man from Illinois will make decisions with his head not his heart. The Weaver's are attached to our town. Mr. Khan is not.
So Jacksonville, this is our moment. It starts with a nationally televised game this Monday night. Let's make sure the stadium is full. Let's make some noise. And then let's follow it up for the remainder of the home schedule regardless of the Jags record.
A wise man once said you never get a second chance to make a first impression. If we really want to keep the Jags in Jacksonville, let's make sure to keep that in mind between now and Monday night.
