Parents need to invest in their childrens' success

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It's back to school for children throughout the first coast this week. The start of a new school year means a fresh start for both students and parents. At The Local Station, we want to encourage you to embrace this new beginning.

It's critical this time of year to remember it takes more than a good school to educate children. And it takes more than a good home. These two parts working together is the recipe to make sure children stay of the right educational track. Children whose parents or caregivers share in their education do better in school. Studies have shown, with parental involvement, kids get higher grades and higher test scores, are more positive people, and behave better both in and out of school.

We urge you, if you have school aged children in your life, get involved. Simple things like consistently reading to your children, or having a real discussion about what they are learning in school can have real affects. Make sure to pay attention to what's going on in school and show you care about your child's progress. If your kids know you expect them to take their studies seriously, chances are they will. By committing to these simple things and doing them on a consistent basis, chances are this year could be the best school year yet. And that's a lesson that's important for everyone.
