Calcium Can Help Women Lose Weight

calcium studyLOS ANGELES, Posted 3:35 p.m. May 3, 1999 -- A new study says calcium might help women lose weight.

The National Dairy Council says young women who take in the minimum amount of recommended calcium a day will experience some weight loss, reported CBS 2 News. The report, however, also pointed out that only a third of young women are even getting the minimum daily dose of calcium.

So, what does the average woman drink every day? According to CBS 2 News, anything but milk.

"I don't eat or drink any product that's derived from animals," one woman told CBS News.

The study focused on a group of young women who all ate normal diets with the same amount of calories. Those who didn't get calcium gained weight, and those who took the minimum daily requirement of calcium, actually lost about six pounds, said CBS 2 News.

If you're concerned about your weight, researchers say you should keep the food you eat high in calcium but low in calories. Researchers suggest women eat foods like skim milk or low-fat cheese. They also say calcium supplements work, but not as effectively as food.
