Pelfrey Goes The Distance As Mets Crush Bravos

POSTED: Wednesday, August 20, 2008

(Sports Network) - Mike Pelfrey tossed his first career complete game and the New York Mets doubled up the Atlanta Braves, 6-3, in the middle test of a three-game series from Shea Stadium.

Pelfrey (12-8) allowed three runs on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts to win for the 10th time in his last 12 decisions. The right-hander also knocked in a run and retired the last 11 batters he faced.

"I feel more confident and I know that if I throw the ball over the plate and I keep it down, I got guys behind me that will make the plays," said Pelfrey.

Daniel Murphy drove in two runs and David Wright added a solo shot for the Mets, who have won eight of their last nine games to remain 1 1/2 games ahead of Philadelphia for first place in the NL East. The Phillies blanked the Washington Nationals, 4-0, on Wednesday.

Fernando Tatis finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Gregor Blanco went 2-for-4 and drove in a run for Atlanta, which has dropped four straight and nine of 10 overall. Jeff Francoeur collected the other hit for the Braves.

Jair Jurrjens (11-9) lost for the fourth time in his last five starts after he gave up six runs -- four earned -- on six hits and three walks in five innings of work.

Aided by shoddy defense from the visiting club, New York scored five times in the opening frame. Argenis Reyes had a one-out single and Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran drew consecutive two-out walks to load the bases for Murphy, whose grounder up the middle chased home two runners and moved Beltran to third.

Tatis then beat out a chopper to Chipper Jones at third for an RBI single. On the play, Jones' throw eluded first baseman Greg Norton and Murphy, chugging hard around the bases, was able to score all the way from first. Brian Schneider hit a ball to Yunel Escobar, but the shortstop's high throw tipped off the glove of Norton and put runners on the corners. Pelfrey then lined a single through the right side for a 5-0 Mets lead.

"I didn't play well and that bothers me," said Jones. "Like so many innings, it just snowballs. Nothing you can do about it."

A run-scoring single by Blanco put the Braves on the board in the third. The Mets, though, got the run back in the fifth on Wright's 24th homer of the season, a lead-off smash to left.

Atlanta managed to scratch out a pair of runs in the sixth without getting the ball out of the infield. Blanco had a bunt single and Escobar and Jones worked consecutive walks to load the bases, bringing up Brian McCann. The All-Star catcher hit a slow roller that resulted in a 4-6-3 twin killing. Blanco scored on the play and a wild pitch allowed Escobar to cross the plate.

In the ninth, Pelfrey fanned Jones and retired McCann and Mark Kotsay to complete his gem.
