JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- With Super Bowl XXXIX just one year and a day away, city leaders have learned that a successful Super Bowl city needs the help of many volunteers.
Jacksonville resident Bud Goza used his experience in Houston to gather advice for volunteers in Jacksonville.
"I am so glad I went to Houston to learn the NFL experience. I got a lot of hands-on information that I can pass on to our volunteers here in Jacksonville, and I think we are going to do it a lot bigger and better. The people that come to Jacksonville are going to be able to enjoy themselves," he said.
Soulan Johnson, who's heading up the volunteer effort in Jacksonville, has answered hundreds of calls from those who want to join. She's done this before in New Orleans, but was amazed at what she found when she got back to Jacksonville after Houston's Super Bowl."There were over a thousand applications over a four-day span. That was more than we expected. We are happy," Johnson said. Now, the host committee is setting up a volunteer command center (pictured, left) that should be up and running this time next week.
Though many people have already offered their service, the city is still looking for more volunteers to pitch in at events planned across the city.Stay tuned to Channel 4's Countdown Zone throughout the next year for continuing coverage as the clock ticks toward Jacksonville's Super Bowl.
