First Coast defeats 7A powerhouse Lakeland 24-14 in state semifinals

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

Three northeast Florida high school football teams played in their first ever state semifinal games Friday night and one came away with a victory.

In the class 7A Final Four, First Coast Buccaneers hosted the Lakeland Dreadnaughts -- a team with as many state championships as the Bucs had all-time postseason wins: six.

Lakeland scored on their first drive of the game, but First Coast quickly answered with a touchdown pass from DeAndre Johnson to Brandon Brooks -- the first of two trips to the end zone by the freshman.

Two of the Bucs scores were on Lakeland turnovers, including an 84 yard fumble return by Reggie Northrup in the fourth quarter that pushed First Coast's lead to 24-14 -- the game's final score.

First Coast will play for a state title against Bradenton Manatee in the Citrus Bowl at 7 p.m. Friday.

Fletcher's record run deep into the Class 8A playoffs came to a painful end Friday night in Tampa.  While the Senators' defense held the Plant Panthers to field goals through most of three quarters.

Fletcher's only scoring drive came late in the fourth quarter, ending with a 10-yard Evan Orth touchdown pass to Clay Bridge.

Plant won 26-7 and earned a trip to the title game in Orlando.  The Senators finish the year 11-3.
In Class 6A action, Bartram Trail scored first and put up four second-half touchdowns, but that wasn't enough to overcome five turnovers and offensive machine of Armwood, ranked No. 2 in the nation by ESPN.

Armwood won 46-38, ending the Bears' season 12-2.
