Former Knicks and Nets guard Ray Williams died on Friday after a long battle with colon cancer. He was 58. Williams, from Mount Vernon, was the 10th pick of the 1977 NBA draft and was a former teammate of Knicks coach Mike Woodson. “It’s a major loss,” Woodson said on Friday. “I was very good friends with Ray.” Woodson’s connection to Williams encouraged Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan three weeks ago to pay for Williams’ travel and medical expenses. Williams was transported from Florida to Manhattan’s Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Following his 10-year playing career, Williams had financial issues that eventually forced him into bankruptcy and homelessness.
