DELAND, Fla. -

Jacksonville University wrapped up a two-game Atlantic Sun road swing on Monday with an 81-72 loss at Stetson. The Dolphins fall to 2-2 in the A-Sun and 7-10 overall as they head back home to host Kennesaw State on Thursday and Mercer on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Arena.

“We have to mature as a group and grow up fast because we have two more games this week waiting for us back home,” said Head Coach Cliff Warren.

Junior Keith McDougald (Jacksonville, Fla.) led JU with 15 points on 6-9 shooting while senior Glenn Powell (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) recorded his third straight double digit game adding 13 points and seven rebounds. Junior Javon Dawson (Cordele, Ga.) posted a career best 12 rebounds with nine points in 21 minutes.

Down by as many as eight points midway through the first half, JU pulled even at 23-23 on an old fashioned three-point play from Dawson. Freshmen Jarvis Haywood eventually gave the Dolphins their first lead of the game at 29-28 as the game remained tight for the next four minutes.

Stetson (5-10; 2-2) would later take control by using a 17-4 run than spanned halftime to secure a 49-36 advantage with 16:36 left to play.

JU’s full court pressure started to wear at the Hatters allowing the Dolphins to trim the margin back down to single digits following two free throws from freshman Kordario Fleming (Memphis, Tenn.) and one from senior Russell Powell (Newnan, Ga.) with less than four minutes remaining.

Stetson’s Chris Perez answered the JU threat however scoring three of his game high 23 points on the other end. The Dolphins would close the gab to within six in the closing seconds before the Hatters sealed the win at the foul line.
