Baltimore Ravens center Matt Birk is expected to announce his retirement Friday after 15 seasons in the NFL.

The Ravens said in a statement that Birk, 36, was to meet with elementary school students in Baltimore on Friday morning as a community reading center dedication and then make "another announcement," the Baltimore Sun reported.

Birk's career with the Ravens and Minnesota Vikings included six trips to the Pro Bowl and a Super Bowl championship this past season. A father of six and a Harvard graduate, Birk was named the NFL's Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2012 for his work in the community.

He had two years remaining on a three-year, $8.525 million contract.
