The Boston Red Sox acquired center fielder Marlon Byrd from the Chicago Cubs on Saturday.

The Cubs also sent cash to Boston in exchange for right-handed pitcher Michael Bowden and a player to be named later.

The Red Sox are shorthanded in the outfield, with center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury sidelined with a dislocated shoulder and left fielder Carl Crawford recovering from offseason wrist surgery.

The 34-year-old Byrd is off to a dreadful start this season, batting .070 with three hits in 43 at-bats.

An All-Star selection in 2010, Byrd batted .276 with nine home runs and 35 RBIs in 119 games last season. He has a .278 career batting average with four different teams.

The Red Sox took another hit in center fielder when Jason Repko was hurt during Friday's loss to the New York Yankees.
