The expected firing of Andy Reid as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles is a mere formality, and Reid has known since Friday that Sunday's game was his last with the team he's coached since 1999.
According to reports, Reid met with owner Jeffrey Lurie on Friday and learned he will be fired in a formal announcement by the team Monday.
FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reported in Sunday's pregame show that Reid was to be fired after a meeting with ownership Monday.
Regardless of the timing, Reid is done with the Eagles, ending the longest-running current marriage between head coach and employer.
Lurie said in August that an 8-8 record wouldn't be considered sufficient in 2012. That was the record posted by the Eagles in 2011, after big spending brought top free agents including cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, defensive end Jason Babin and defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins. And the label from then-backup quarterback Vince Young of "Dream Team."
The Super Bowl goals considered legitimate when Lurie discussed Reid's tenure and tenuous future in preseason melted quickly. Michael Vick was injured multiple times in preseason and turned in a clunker of a season that was all but over by Halloween. Infighting, injuries to key personnel and ineffective play by the offensive line all contributed to the downfall of the Eagles and Reid.
Their season ended Sunday in a 42-7 loss to the Giants, the 12th defeat this season for the Eagles.
Oregon coach Chip Kelly, Penn State coach Bill O'Brien and the Gruden Brothers -- Bengals' offensive coordinator Jay Gruden and ESPN analyst Jon Gruden -- are considered top options for the Eagles.
