Sullivan leads Coyotes to shootout win over Ducks
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Steve Sullivan alleviated the pressure of a long goalless streak in style Saturday.
Sullivan sent the game into overtime with a goal late in the third period -- his first goal in 14 games -- and scored the only shootout goal and the Phoenix Coyotes beat the Mighty Ducks 5-4 at Jobing.Com Arena.
"You're trying to rush pucks and you're not as confident as you usually are," Sullivan said. "When you are, you take your time. You make the right plays. I know how long it's been since I scored a goal so I felt a lot of pressure."
Sullivan recorded a hat trick in the season's third game against Columbus then added a goal and an assist the next night against San Jose. And that was that, at least until Saturday.
"There are times with a player like that, if he's not getting chances and he's not around it, there'd be some concern," said Coyotes coach Dave Tippett. "But he's been around it and if you do that enough, you're going to be rewarded."
Mike Smith made 31 saves in regulation and overtime then stopped Nick Bonino, Corey Perry and Saku Koivu in succession in the shootout as the Coyotes (10-8-3) won for the second time in three games.
Lauri Korpikoski scored a pair of goals and Matthew Lombardi also scored for the Coyotes, who were playing the first of three straight games against Anaheim.
Andrew Cogliano recorded his second career hat trick -- both on the road against the Coyotes -- and Koivu also scored for the Ducks (15-3-2), who lost for only the second time in 10 games.
Anaheim was playing its second straight game and fifth in seven nights.
"We looked and felt as tired as we have all year," Bobby Ryan said. "We were a pretty tired group. You could see it in the legs."
Koivu broke a 3-3 tie when he took a pass from Ryan between the circles and beat Smith with three seconds left in a goaltender interference penalty against Kyle Chipchura.
Replays showed Cogliano literally had a hand in the goal's setup, pushing Chipchura into Anaheim goaltender Viktor Fasth from behind.
But Sullivan evened the game at 4-all when he scored on a long rebound to the right of the net.
Cogliano needed just 21 seconds to give Anaheim a 1-0 lead, one-timing a shot from the left doorstop off a pass from Koivu.
Lombardi tied the game at 10:30 of the period. Raffi Torres' initial shot from the left baseball circle bounced off the back boards to Lombardi, who bounced a shot off Fasth's chest from the right side of the crease.
Korpikoski made it 2-1 at 12:32 of the second but Cogliano answered 27 seconds later when he took a long outlet pass from Ben Jovejoy and scored from the right faceoff circle.
Cogliano completed the natural hat trick at 17:26 after Daniel Winnik pushed Derek Morris off the puck to Smith's left.
"I can't really explain it," Cogliano said. "It felt like the lines were playing good and I just shot the puck and it fell in the net."
Korpikoski scored his second 16 seconds into the third period, tying the game at 3-3.
"We're going to feel like we let a point get away, giving up the leads a couple of times," Ryan said. "It's a loss. There's no way around it."
Fasth made 33 saves for the Ducks.
