Senior forward Juvonte Reddic posted 18 points and seven rebounds to lead the visiting Virginia Commonwealth Rams to an 80-66 victory over the Dayton Flyers on Wednesday at Dayton Arena in Dayton, Ohio.
Reddic was one of three players who scored in double figures for the Rams (15-4, 3-1 Atlantic 10 Conference), who have won seven of their last eight games. Junior guard Briante Weber had 18 points and five assists. Junior guard Treveon Graham had 14 points and six rebounds.
Senior forward Devin Oliver scored a game-high 21 points for Dayton (13-6, 1-3). Sophomore forward Dyshawn Pierre had 14 points and six rebounds.
Virginia Commonwealth jumped out to a 9-4 lead after Johnson made a 3-pointer with 16:12 remaining in the opening period, but Dayton tied the game at 11 moments later on a jumper by Pierre. The game was still tied midway through the half when senior guard Rob Brandenberg scored to spark a 14-2 run that put the Rams up 30-18 with 5:28 to go.
Virginia Commonwealth led 36-27 at halftime and extended its lead to 11 on a jumper by Reddic with 17:11 to play. Dayton cut the lead to five on back-to-back 3-pointers by sophomore guard Khari Price and junior guard Jordan Sibert.
The Rams soon regained control and stretched their lead to 15 on consecutive 3-pointers by freshman guard JeQuan Lewis with just under 10 minutes remaining. Dayton briefly cut the deficit to 11 with 7:46 to go, but the Rams outscored the Flyers 9-0 over the next 2 minutes to take a 69-49 lead with 5:55 to play.
