Charlton County baseball champs again

Indians win back to back Class A state titles

FOLKSTON, Ga. – Charlton County beat Gordon Lee for the second consecutive year in the Georgia Class A Public school baseball championship.

"It feels like we haven't won one before," said head coach Thad Marchman. "It feels like the first time. It's just awesome because it's such a long road and you have to keep on and keep at it and keep at it. We had several doubters and I'm just happy for these guys that they were able to come through."

The Indians won game three of the best of three series 2-1 this afternoon.

Scott Birchall delivered the clutch two run double in the bottom of the fifth to give the Indians their first lead at 2-1.

"I thought the kid had it because they have really good outfielders," said Birchall. "I thought he was going to catch it. But in my mind, we had a guy tagging at third base and we get to tie the ballgame. But I just played a little pepper and smacked it and it did what it was supposed to do."

Indians starter Richard Dasher made the lead hold up allowing one run and four hits in a complete game.

"We encouraged the younger kids to come up and keep it going," said Dasher. "Keep the dynasty going. Keep what we started going."

Charlton County finishes the season 32-3, a school record for wins.
