QBs Hutson Mason, Tommy Armstrong Jr. get Gator Bowl starts

Both team's star quarterbacks will be watching from sidelines

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A tale of two quarterbacks, as neither Georgia's Aaron Murray or Nebraska's Taylor Martinez will play in Wednesday's Gator Bowl -- what would have been the final game of their college careers.

Hutson Mason will start in place of Murray, who cut his season short with a torn ACL. Mason had his first start of the season on Nov. 30, and took the Bulldogs to victory in double-overtime against Kentucky.

Mason has said his strengths are in accuracy and playmaking; he's a player that get's the ball off fast. The question will be whether he'll be able to get the ball downfield, as he's said arm strength is something he continues to work on.

Tommy Armstrong Jr. will be starting for the Corhuskers, in for Taylor Martinez who is still dealing with a foot injury. This will be Martinez's ninth missed game of the season.

Armstrong has been recovering from ankle injury, and is still listed on the injury report. It's possible he won't be completely healed by the time of the game.

From three different starts as QB, Armstrong has proven impressive at times. Against South Dakota State, he came out with an 80 percent completion rate. But in other games, he's had problems hitting his targets. Against Purdue, his completion rate plummeted to 33 percent.

As their star quarterbacks will be watching from the sidelines, the Bulldogs and Cornhuskers will have their work cut out for them come game day.

Both Mason and Armstrong have their strengths and weaknesses, which for fans should fortunately make for an otherwise interesting matchup.
