Countdown to Training Camp: Aaron Colvin

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Due to a lower leg injury cornerback Aaron Colvin missed the Jaguars entire offseason program. The Jaguars aren’t required to provide information on injuries prior to training camp, but Colvin was spotted in a walking boot during organized team activities. The undisclosed injury isn’t expected to prevent the Jaguars starting nickel cornerback from being ready for the start of training camp next month.

Position: Cornerback

2016 Stats: Colvin was suspended for the first four games of the season after violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. Once returning to the field Colvin played in 10 games and finished with 22 tackles and no pass breakups. He missed the final two games of the year due to a foot injury.

2017 Projection: The Jaguars feel very comfortable having Colvin cover the slot receiver with both Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye on the outside. Colvin is also eligible for a contract extension but the major knock on him is that in three seasons he’s yet to record an interception. Top NFL cornerbacks usually command a salary of $10 million a year or more. But because Colvin plays in the slot (which is usually devalued compared to outside CBs) it will be interesting to see if the Jaguars make an attempt to extend Colvin this summer.

From the locker room:

Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone on how confident is he that Barry Church, Tashaun Gipson and Aaron Colvin will be ready for camp:

“I’ve gotten caught with that question before. I’ve been told a lot of things and I’ve come out in a meeting and said I’m 110 percent sure that this player will be able to play and I was told that and all of a sudden the player couldn’t and then I’ve gotten crushed for lying to the media and everything. So I just think that when the day comes I’ll just update people on what goes on. I’m not going to talk about confidence in anything or anything of that nature. I apologize for that, but I’m not going to make the same mistake twice. We’ll see when we report to training camp.”
