Day 3 of 2017 NFL Draft

Jags draft Dede Westbrook in round 4, Blair Brown in round 5

PHILADELPHIA – The Jacksonville Jaguars kicked off day 3 of the 2017 NFL Draft Saturday by selecting University of Dede Westbrook (110 overall).

Westbrook is a slot receiver and return man with explosive speed, but is considered undersized and has durability concerns. Westbrook also has off-the-field issues. He was twice arrested for domestic violence before he got to Oklahoma but was never convicted. Westbrook measures in at 6-feet tall, weighing 178 pounds.

“We did a lot of work on it, all the way back to his high school days," said Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell. "We have some really good sources there at Oklahoma that I have known for a long period of time. The football aspect of it is really good. Obviously he has had some issues early in his career. We feel that is behind and that has to be behind him. There is no choice now.  Obviously with Coach [Doug] Marrone and Coach [Tom] Coughlin here there is no margin for error for him off the field.”

In round 5, the Jaguars selected Ohio University inside linebacker Blair Brown (148 overall).

Brown has good instincts defending the run. Where he lacks in ideal arm-length, he makes up for with athleticism and tackling ability. Brown could also make an immediate impact on special teams. Brown is 6-feet tall and weighs 238 pounds.

"He’s got a lot of range to get outside," said Jaguars Director of College Scouting Mark Ellenz. "He comes down hill. He comes down hill with purpose. He’s got a lot of good edge to him as we like to call it, very physical player, really loves football.  He’s into it. Kind of meets all the criteria that we’re looking for in a linebacker.”

In round seven (No. 222 overall) the Jaguars selected Minnesota cornerback Jalen Myrick.

Also in round seven (No. 240 overall) the Jaguars selected Miami fullback Marquez Williams.

The Jaguars also added linebacker Justin Horton as a free agent. The former JU Dolphin is listed at 6'2" and 240 pounds. The Jaguars were present at JU's pro day and that earned Horton a shot to make the team.

After selecting Leonard Fournette with the fourth pick of the draft on Thursday, the Jaguars went with Alabama offensive tackle Cam Robinson in the second round (34th overall).

In round No. 3 the Jaguars selected Illinois DE Dawuane Smoot (63rd overall). Smoot is listed as standing 6 feet, 3 inches tall and weighing 260 pounds. He recorded five sacks last season at Illinois.

"I felt I should've went a lot higher, but I'm just happy to get picked," said Smoot on a conference call Friday night.

This is the second straight season that the Jaguars have selected a pass rusher in the third round of the NFL Draft. As a rookie, Yannick Ngakoue led the team with eight sacks.
