TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Better later than never.
That seemed to be the motto at Florida State as the Seminoles waited nearly a month to celebrate their third national championship in school history. But it was well worth the wait as nearly 30,000 fans packed into Doak Campbell Stadium.
"That was unbelievable," said head coach Jimbo Fisher. "Just the support of our fans. Like I've said it's one of the great fan bases in college football and it's a very special place to play and be."
The ceremony was originally scheduled for January 18, but FSU pushed back the date due to player conflicts. NFL prospects Devonta Freeman, James Wilder Jr., Kelvin Benjamin, Telvin Smith and Timmy Jernigan all returned to Tallahassee to participate in the event.
"It wouldn't have been right not to come back and show love to everybody who gave us that same love during the season," said Smith. "It was definitely fun. Always going to be something we remember."
It was a historic season for Florida State: a perfect 14-0 record to go along with a Heisman Trophy for its quarterback, Jameis Winston. And it's not lost on Jimbo Fisher.
"To me, this team dominated maybe like no other team in college football history."
