Rob Strano introduces deaf students to golf

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fl. – After finishing a 15 year professional golf career, Rob Strano was at a loss for what to do with the rest of his life. In 2003 he felt a calling to learn sign language and that led to what has now become his mission.

This is the 13th straight year that Strano has hosted a golf clinic at THE PLAYERS for students from the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind. This is the only known golf clinic of its kind.

“I saw this as a great opportunity to give back to the game and share it with kids who don’t get access to the game of golf,” said Strano who is now the Director of U.S. Golf Deaf Camps.

For most of the students attending this golf clinic this is their first time ever stepping on a golf course.

“The thing most of the students walk away with is confidence that they can do anything,” said Strano. “People ask me all the time what do you see in these kids when you do a camp? I tell them I see successful people. It might be in business or they may become doctors or attorneys. But I see successful kids. They even may go on to be a great athletes. The only thing is they can’t hear. By coming here today they get the confidence to see that they can do something like golf. It gives them the courage to try other things and succeed in life.”

In addition to this golf clinic at THE PLAYERS, Strano travels around the country teaching golf to those who may have never been able to learn the game.
