Jaguars help local students prepare for school

Jaguars give backpacks to children from the United Way of Northeast Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As the Jaguars prepare for their first preseason game of 2015-2016, there are many questions surrounding what will happen on the field. One thing that cannot be questioned, the team's work off the field. On Monday, Defensive End Tyson Alualu and Running Back Denard Robinson teamed up with other members of the team to donate backpacks, school supplies and shoes to children from the United Way of Northeast Florida.

It's something that hits close to home for Denard Robinson.

"We had 7 kids so it was tough for my mom and my dad to supply things for us, so it means a lot to give back and help out," said Robinson.

Through Robinson's The Shoelace Foundation, he has been busy all summer hosting charity events locally and back in his hometown of Deerfield Beach.  Robinson decided he wanted to send the children back to school in a new pair of shoes and once Alualu heard about the idea, he wanted to show his support by purchasing bags and school supplies to accompany the shoes.

Giving back has become contagious throughout the locker room.

Last Friday, Defensive Tackle Sen'Derrick Marks gave away backpacks filled with school supplies to 150 kids from the Boys and Girls Club or Northeast Florida.

Marks attributes the team's giving spirit to the culture of the locker room.

"We're all brothers, if any one person does something you'll see the entire defensive line having their back, " Marks said. " We play that way and we act that way when we're not on the field."
