Jaguars sign two draft picks

4th round safety James Sample and 7th round receiver Neal Sterling agree to terms with the Jaguars Wednesday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Three of the eight Jaguars draft picks from the 2015 NFL Draft have been signed to contracts.

James Sample, a 4th round pick from Louisville and 7th rounder Neal Sterling, a wide receiver from Monmouth both agreed to contracts Wednesday according to the team.

Sample, who declared for the draft following his junior season, played his final collegiate season at Louisville where he started all 13 games in 2014. He led the team with 90 tackles and ranked second on the squad with four interceptions. Sample produced 14 tackles and three passes defensed in the Belk Bowl against Georgia, his final collegiate game. He became the first player drafted from Louisville in Jaguars history.


Sample, a native of Sacramento, California, began his collegiate career at the University of Washington. He spent two seasons (2011-12) with the Huskies before transferring to American River College (Calif.) in 2013 where he didn't play football. He attended Grant High School where he was rated a four-star recruit by Rivals.com and rated the No. 9 safety in the country.

Neal Sterling became the second player in Monmouth history to be selected in the NFL Draft. He finished his collegiate career with 212 receptions for 2,615 yards and 22 touchdowns in 43 career games. He concluded his career as the school's all-time leader in receptions and had at least five receiving touchdowns in all four seasons. Sterling was a first-team All-Big South selection as a senior, finishing with 55 receptions for 905 yards and six touchdowns. He led the conference in yards per catch (16.9) while ranking second in receptions per game (5.5).


The Belmar, New Jersey native had a team-high 57 catches for 647 yards and six touchdowns as a junior in 2013. He started 10 games as a sophomore and totaled 33 receptions for 386 yards and five touchdowns. As a true freshman in 2011, he led the team with 677 yards and five touchdowns on 57 receptions.
