Jaguars focus on defense on Day 3 of NFL Draft

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jaguars turned their attention to defense on Day 3 of the NFL Draft.

They selected cornerback Aaron Colvin of Oklahoma with the 14th pick of the fourth round (114th overall), Florida State linebacker Telvin Smith with the fourth pick of the fifth round (144th overall) and Arkansas defensive end Chris Smith with the 19th pick of the fifth round (159th overall).

All three played for the Jaguars' coaching staff at the Senior Bowl.

"We got to see if they were a cultural fit hit," general manager Dave Caldwell said of working with the players at the Senior Bowl, "and we felt like they would be."

The Jaguars selected Virginia center Luke Bowanko (6-5, 293) in the sixth round with the 29th pick (205th overall). In the seventh round, the Jaguars took UCF running back Storm Johnson (6-0, 209) with the seventh pick (222nd overall).

The Jaguars selected Oklahoma CB Aaron Colvin in the fourth round of the NFL Draft.

In 2013, Colvin (5-11, 177) had five tackles for loss and one sack in 11 games, missing time because of turf toe and shoulder injuries.

"I love that organization, so I'm thrilled to get picked by them," Colvin (pictured, Associated Press photo) said in a Jaguars conference call. "I know when my time comes I'll be ready to contribute to the team, and I will be a playmaker."

Telvin Smith (6-2, 218) had  90 tackles, two sacks and three interceptions last season for the the national champion Seminoles. He ran a 4.52 time in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine and had 214 tackles (29 for loss), seven sacks and four interceptions in his college career.

He reportedly failed a drug test at the Combine.

The Jaguars selected Florida State linebacker Telvin Smith in the fifth round of the NFL Draft.

"I talked to coach Gus (Bradley) and everybody leading up to the draft. It was a dumb mistake that I made," Telvin Smith (pictured, Associated Press photo) said in a Jaguars conference call. "Coming off a lot of hiatuses, sometimes you get outside your box and you make dumb mistakes. I've dealt with the consequences so far.

"I gave the coaches my word that that's behind us. We're going to move forward, and we're going to go get us a Super Bowl. It's destiny."

Chris Smith (6-1, 266) finished with 8.5 sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss in 2013. He had 21.5 career sacks and 30.5 career tackles for loss at Arkansas.

The Jaguars drafted Arkansas defensive end Chris Smith in the fifth round of the NFL Draft.

"He's been a very productive pass rusher in the SEC," Caldwell said of Chris Smith (pictured, Associated Press photo). "And he had a really good week at the Senior Bowl against top competition down there. He's a very good football player, very instinctive."

Colvin tore his right ACL during Senior Bowl practice, requiring surgery, and he was medically excluded from the NFL Scouting Combine. That didn't stop Jaguars coach Gus Bradley from expressing his desire to draft Colvin.

"I was on my way to go meet with the Giants (at the Combine), and he pulled me over to the side and he was like, 'We still love you. I'm going to come get you. You can bank on that,'" Colvin said in a Jaguars conference call. "I didn't really think of it too much.

"(But the conversation) came (back) to me right when I saw that 904 number. I knew that was a Florida number. I had a feeling it was them, and when it was, I was just thrilled."

Colvin said he had surgery about a week after the Senior Bowl and is on track in his recovery.

"It's just a blessing," Colvin said of being drafted. "I really didn't know what to expect. I hadn't really talked to the Jaguars since the Combine.

"I know I can play with the best of them, and that's what I'm going to do when I get to Jacksonville."

Johnson, who started his college career at Miami before transferring to Central Florida, had a break-out season in 2013, rushing for 1,139 yards on 213 carries and scoring 14 touchdowns. He also caught 30 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns.

Johnson had five 100-yard rushing games last season, including 124 yards on 20 carries with three touchdowns against Baylor in the Fiesta Bowl.

The Jaguars drafted UCF quarterback Blake Bortles with the No. 3 overall pick on Thursday, and followed that by picking two receivers and a lineman on Day 2.

The Jaguars took USC wide receiver Marqise Lee with the seventh pick of the second round (39th overall) and Penn State WR Allen Robinson with the 29th pick of the second round (61st overall).

They selected University of Miami guard Brandon Linder with the 29th pick of the third round (93rd overall).
