JU rides defense to win over Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Running back Ulysses Bryant rushed for 85 yards and scored one touchdown and the Jacksonville University defense intercepted four passes, returning one for a score as the Dolphins beat Campbell, 20-14, in a Pioneer Football League game here Saturday.

The win was the eight consecutive against the Camels, a team to whom JU has never lost
.
The Dolphins scored first on an eight-play, 66-yard drive with 8:55 to play when Bryant ran in to the left corner of the end zone from 4 yards out.

The Dolphins scored again with five seconds to play in the quarter when place kicker Brandon Behr connected on a 32-yard field goal and a 10-0 lead which held until the half.

Safety Andrew Hooks, who had two interceptions, put JU up 17-0 when he picked off a Kameron Bryant pass and returned it 26 yards for a score with 12:03 to play in the third quarter.

"The defense played well and put me in position to make plays,'' said Hooks. "We were in one high and the corner made a great play, the ball got tipped, I got it and everybody blocked with no holds and I did what I had to do.''

Place kicker Brandon Behr sealed the game for the Dolphins (8-2, 5-2) when he connected on a 38-yard field goal with 1:15 to play and a 20-7 lead. Campbell (5-6, 3-5) scored a late touchdown but its onside kick attempt was recovered by JU redshirt freshman Nick Duchy.

Behr, a redshirt junior from Fleming Island, Fla., had a 32-yard field goal in the first quarter and is now one from tying Dylan Lynch's JU career record of 25 field goals.
Dolphin quarterback Rylan Wells, making his first collegiate start, completed 11 of 20 passes for 115 yards but was sacked six times. He had 21 yards rushing.

Ulysses Bryant gained his yardage on 17 carries and wide receiver Damien Strange led JU receivers with three catches for 39 yards.

Kameron Bryant was 10-for-24 for 155 yards and the four interceptions and Campbell running back DeShawn Jones had 23 carries for 82 yards.

"The defense played really well today,'' JU coach Kerwin Bell said. "On offense, we did just enough to get the job done.''

The Dolphins wrap up their season next Saturday with a final home game against Valparaiso and will celebrate Senior Day. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
