Of not was Smith's scholarship. She took up golf in honor of her older sister, Danielle, who also went to UWF with a golf scholarship, but was killed her freshman year in an automobile accident while driving home from college on Interstate 10.

"SHe was my hero then and she still is to this day," Kayla Smith wrote in a letter about her scholarship. "I started playing golf at eight-years-old because my sister was playing. I wanted to be as good as her. I look back at my high school career and hope I've honored her with my playing. I'm now hoping to continue with my golf at the collegiate level and play golf at The University of West Florida and continue what my sister started."
