Jaguars better but not good enough against Ravens

Penalties, penalties, penalties:

In the week leading up to the Ravens game, Jaguars coach Gus Bradley said that his team would be focused on cleaning up the little things. However, penalties were once again an issue against Baltimore.

In the first half alone the following plays killed the Jaguars:

- TE Marcedes Lewis had a long gain called back due to a holding penalty on RT Jeremy Parnell

- On the Ravens final drive of the first half the Jaguars were on the verge of forcing a punt, until DT Malik Jackson was whistled for touching Joe Flacco’s facemask.

- Later in that same drive Ravens K Justin Tucker missed a 57-yard FG. On the play Jaguars DE Dante Fowler was called for unsportsmanlike conduct. That gave Tucker another opportunity and he buried the 42-yard FG.

The Jaguars aren’t good enough to overcome these untimely penalties.

Getting the ball to No. 15:

When you have Allen Robinson at wide receiver he has to get the football. Overall he’s the best individual player the Jaguars have. After being targeted 15 times in the season opener against Green Bay, Robinson only saw five balls come his way against San Diego.

During this week in practice quarterback Blake Bortles said that getting Robinson involved early would be a priority. In the first half alone, Bortles targeted Robinson nine times. In theory yes you want to get the ball to your best player as much as possible. Having tunnel vision on Robinson cost Bortles in the first half. Bortles was looking for Robinson over the middle of the field when he was intercepted by Ravens linebacker C.J. Mosely. It’s a pass that Bortles shouldn’t have thrown and to make matters worse he threw off his back foot, which led to not getting enough on the pass.

Robinson’s second touchdown catch of the game, showed why he’s an elite wide receiver.

Running game still an issue:

This stat sums up the Jaguars rushing offense. After one quarter of play Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco had 13 yards rushing and a touchdown. Meanwhile the Jaguars combination of T.J. Yeldon and Chris Ivory had just 14 yards rushing.

Things didn’t improve for the Jaguars after the first quarter. Due to injuries there were a few changes along the offensive line. That’s no excuse for averaging under three yards per carry.
