Jaguars name Keenan McCardell WR coach

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A familiar name is the newest edition to the Jaguars coaching staff. Keenan McCardell has re-joined the team as their wide receivers coach. Once again we're starting to see Tom Coughlin's influence on this organization. McCardell spent six seasons in Jacksonville where Coughlin was his head coach.

“We all understand what Keenan means to this organization and we are excited to welcome him home to Jacksonville, as he’ll oversee the growth and consistent improvement of our receiving corps,” said Jaguars Executive Vice President of Football Operations Tom Coughlin. “I had the pleasure of coaching Keenan for six seasons and understand his passion for the game of football and his burning desire to win. When Keenan served as a coaching intern with the Giants in 2009, I knew then that he would have a future in this industry. His 17 years of playing experience will prove very beneficial to the young group of receivers and we are grateful to have him on our staff.”

McCardell, 47, last coached wide receivers at the University of Maryland from 2014-15. A two-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time Super Bowl champion, McCardell spent six seasons (1996-2001) with the Jaguars, totaling 499 receptions for 6,393 yards and 30 TDs, which all rank second in franchise history.

“With 17 years of playing experience and more than four years of coaching, Keenan’s attention to detail and intensity will be instrumental in the progression of our wide receivers,” said Jaguars Head Coach Doug Marrone.

As an NFL player, McCardell appeared in 209 career games, with 168 starts, and amassed 883 career receptions for 11,373 yards and 63 touchdowns.  His 883 receptions rank 13th all-time in NFL history, while his 11,373 yards rank 23rd in league annals. McCardell played for five NFL franchises during his 17-year career, most notably with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 1996-2001, earning the nickname “Thunder.” Along with fellow WR and 2016 Pride of the Jaguars inductee, Jimmy Smith, who was known as “Lightning,” the dynamic duo, referred to as “Thunder and Lightning,” formed one of the most impressive receiver tandems in the NFL at that time.

McCardell ranks second all-time in receptions (499) and receiving yards (6,393) in Jaguars history, including a career-best 94 receptions for 1,207 yards during the 2000 season. McCardell earned his first Pro Bowl selection in 1996 after totaling a team-best 85 receptions for 1,129 yards and three touchdowns.
