News and Notes: Jaguars training camp Day No. 1

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Here are a few news and notes as the Jaguars opened up training camp for the 2016 season.

-20 minutes before the start of practice offensive tackle Kelvin Beachum was the first player on the field. He’s been cleared medically but the Jaguars are going to bring him along slowly as he recovers from an ACL injury.

Beachum went through individual drills and Gus Bradley said that they will add more repetitions to his plate each day until they feel he’s ready for full 11-on-11 drills.

Also in addition to competing with Luke Joeckel for the starting job at left tackle, Beachum also spent time at left guard.

-Jalen Ramsey was back on the practice field and was a full participant. He spent the majority of the day playing outside the numbers at cornerback but he also got some reps inside at nickel corner.

-The Jaguars defense picked off two passes on Day. No. 1 of training camp. Free safety Tashaun Gipson got an interception off a tipped ball. Cornerback Davon House also made a nice interception.

-It was also quite warm on the first day of camp. DT Malik Jackson joked that he’s going to have to make sure he brings an extra pair of shoes and socks for each practice. He said that by the middle of practice he felt like he had water in his shoes because he was sweating so much.

He said it:

OT Kelvin Beachum on competition with Luke Joeckel: “It is going well. I think it will be a great competition. I am looking forward to competing. I am looking forward to doing whatever it takes making this team the best we can be.  I am going to do my part and contribute for us to be the team that we desire to be.”

Gus Bradley on the opening day of training camp:  “I thought it was a good practice, a lot of big plays. There was some sloppiness at the start of the periods, but we will use that as a measuring stick. We’ll learn from the good and learn from the bad, but their intensity and how they competed, that’s good; but we really want to teach these guys the level of expectations. We really want to drive that home with them and show them that at team meetings. You know, ARob [Allen Robinson] makes a play on the sideline, big throw good catch, we expect those plays. You know I really want to drive that mindset home. Overall, pretty good, but we just got some areas we need to improve.”
