Fans cheer after Jaguars draft LSU RB Leonard Fournette

Excitement over team's newest addition lights up EverBank Field

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After the Jacksonville Jaguars selected LSU running back Leonard Fournette on Thursday night with the fourth pick in the 2017 NFL draft, thousands of fans at EverBank Field erupted in cheers.

Though the pick was announced at the 82nd annual draft in Philadelphia, there was a celebration happening in Jacksonville. As Fournettes's name was called, fans lit up EverBank Field with excitement at the 2017 draft party.

"I think that was the best pick we could have possibly made," said Jaguars fan David Strong.

This is the first draft for the Jaguars since Tom Coughlin took over as the executive vice president of football operations. Fournette is the second running back Coughlin has drafted in the top 10 -- the other one was Fred Taylor.

"He's a monster now -- 240 pounds! He's a beast! I wouldn't want to hit him," Andrew Hampton said.

During the draft party, fans were visibly happy about the team's newest addition as they enjoyed the festivities, including a rock wall, inflatable games, trampolines and face painting.

Jaguars fan Jacob Matthews said Fournette will bring a unique aspect to the team.

"He's bringing an angry run style. This guy is a monster of a running back. He's everything you want in a running back," Matthews said.

Fournette was the No. 1 high school player in the country as a senior. He was one of the best running backs in college, if not the best, during his entire career at LSU.

"I think he's going to destroy. After we saw that last clip of what he used to do when he was at LSU, he's going to dominate," said Zion McDonald, a little Jags fan.

Even before the pick was made, Fournette was by far the most popular pick from fans.

“They spent a lot of money on defense last year, so offense is where it's at anyway. That's what we go to see,” Glenn Domen said. “The Jags, it's cycles. They will show up one day as Super Bowl champs."

The results in the Facebook poll ahead of the pick were pretty close. More than 700 people voted, and 40 percent said the Jaguars should go running back at the fourth spot; 35 percent said the team needs a quarterback there; and 12 percent each went with defensive line or something else.

In a similar poll on Twitter, the results were almost the exact same.

Injuries interrupted Fournette's junior year as an ankle injury limited his playing time to just seven games. But Jacksonville fans are still optimistic about his future with the Jaguars.

"I think he was a really good pick. I think he's an awesome running back as long as he stays healthy," said fan Lynsey Dewalt. "Hopefully, (he'll bring) a lot more strength than they've had in the past."

Thursday night's draft party also featured Jaguars players and former players, who were signing autographs and taking photos. Fans also had a chance to meet the ROAR Cheerleaders and mascot Jaxson de Ville.

Welcome to Jacksonville, Leonard Fournette!
