JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Patric Young, who starred at center for the Florida Gators basketball team for four seasons, was not selected Thursday night in the NBA Draft.

The 6-10, 247-pound Jacksonville native is now an unrestricted free agent.

"Sometimes it's better not to get drafted because then you have a choice where you want to go," News4Jax Sports Director Sam Kouvaris said. "He would be able to pick some team that would want to sign him as a free agent."

Young gathered with family and friends at a draft party at Latitude 30 on the Southside. But they were left disappointed when he was not picked.

"It wouldn't surprise me if it took Patric two or three teams and maybe two or three years to find the right fit -- you see that in the NBA a lot -- but once he does, to stick for a long time," Kouvaris said.

Young worked out with at least a dozen teams before the draft, "so he'll know where that fit is," Kouvaris said.

Young averaged 11 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game in his senior season and was a key piece to the Gators' 36-3 record and Final Four run.
