Future of Armada, NASL on hold

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Due to financial issues the future of the National American Soccer League is in question. The league has already lost three teams. Last week the Jacksonville Armada released five of its highest paid players and laid off several team employees.

A decision by the United States Soccer Federation on if the NASL would retain its Division 2 status was supposed to be rendered by Friday. According to a report by the Indianapolis Star that decision has been delayed.

"Discussions are still ongoing and will be through the end of the year," a USSF spokesman told IndyStar. The spokesman added "there is no specific reason" for the delay and that sides "are still talking it through."

That ruling will likely determine whether the Armada will remain in the NASL or perhaps move to another league for the 2017 season.

“It is my intention to keep the sport of professional soccer alive in Jacksonville and I am working with my leadership team at the Armada to develop a strategy that does just that,” said Armada FC owner Mark Frisch in a statement on Dec. 7. “Jacksonville’s soccer fans have proven that it is a viable market – and we are working hard to make sure our vision for the future comes to fruition.”
