Suns ready for opening day

Jacksonville will defend their Southern League championship Thursday at Bragan Field

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – New shirts around the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville say "6 Flags over Bragan Field" for the 6 Southern League Championships the Suns have won.

They would like to make it seven this year.

With 20 players that have never played in Jacksonville and a new manager, David Berg, it is not going to be easy for the defending champs.

"Every day you go out there to win," Berg said. "Hopefully at the end of the year you win enough games to get into the postseason and have a chance to repeat."

Coming off of a 14-8 win last week over their parent club, the Miami Marlins, spirits are high with the Suns and they say opening day cannot come soon enough.  That especially goes for opening night starter Trevor Williams.

"It's a long off-season and we are looking forward to opening night.  You train your whole life to slow your game down so it's just another game."

One of the twenty new players to the Suns has a local tie.  Matt Tomshaw played his college ball at Jacksonville University and says he's happy to be back.

"I'm in a new place, back in Jacksonville, it actually makes me very happy.  New team, new organization for me and I'm really excited to get this going."

The Suns start a 20-game home stand at Bragan Field Thursday night against the Jackson Generals.  First pitch is at 7:05.
