JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jerron Granberry scored 20 points and Parker Smith 17 as North Florida broke its school record for wins in a season with a 70-64 victory over Jacksonville on Friday night.
The Ospreys (16-15, 10-8 Atlantic Sun Conference) had won 15 games three times in their 19 previous seasons. Last year they reached the mark for the first time in six Division I seasons.
North Florida never trailed. The Ospreys led 33-17 after Granberry closed the first half with a pair of 3-pointers, and they never led by fewer than six points the rest of the way.
"Our program continues to make unbelievable strides," said UNF head coach Matthew Driscoll , who has led the team to improved win totals in each of his three seasons at the helm. "Again, the guys showed a great deal of resiliency, confidence and courage in this game. Overall it was another stellar team effort. I thought we played extremely well defensively, especially in the first half. We are definitely playing well and looking forward to getting started with tournament play."
Tevin Galvin scored 17 points to lead the Dolphins (8-21, 6-12), who missed a chance to clinch the eighth and final berth in the Atlantic Sun tournament. They advanced when Stetson lost to South Carolina Upstate on Saturday.
JU will play top seed Belmont Wednesday at 2:30 while UNF faces 4 seed East Tennessee State Thursday at 2:30.
