Kendricks lands vault of 5.85 meters

Sam Kendricks of the United States won the bronze in the pole vault Monday night at the Rio Olympics.

The rookie Olympian's best vault measured out at 5.85 meters to land him in third place.

Thiago Braz da Silva of Brazil won gold with his best attempt reaching 6.03 meters, while Renaud Lavillenie of France won silver with his best of 5.98 meters.

Kendricks had the highest vault in Saturday's qualifying round with 5.70 meters.

The 23-year-old Mississippi native ran collegiately at Ole Miss, where he was a two-time NCAA champion in the event. He also won national championships in 2014 and 2015, as well as a silver medal at the 2016 World Indoor Championships.

In qualifying for the Rio Games, Kendricks set a new U.S. Olympic Trials record in the event with a vault of 5.91 meters.

The other two U.S. competitors in the event, Logan Cunningham and Cale Simmons, failed to move out of the qualifying round.
