Damany Lewis
A south Chicago native, Damany joined WJXT in December, 2001 from WICD, in Champaign, Ill. where he was a general assignment reporter focusing on numerous in depth reports, from juvenile detention centers to credit card fraud.
Although Damany is a midwesterner at heart, he has roots here in the Sunshine State. He worked at WTWC in Tallahassee as part-time sports reporter, his beat including the national champion Florida State University Seminoles and the Florida A&M Rattlers.
Before that he worked as a sports reporter and producer for the Florida Sunshine Network for the weekly show called "Players of the Game," covering Florida A&M sports and airing across the entire state of Florida.
Damany began his career in television behind the scenes as a production assistant at another Tallahassee station, WTXL, where he did everything from run teleprompter to the audio board.
After a year, he then moved to WTWC in Tallahassee, where he was hired as the chief weekend editor and a part-time sports photographer.
Damany's first on-air experience for a news station came when he convinced his news director at WTWC to allow him to cover a group of children going to their first baseball game.
Damany graduated from Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, where he received a bachelors of science in broadcast journalism with a minor in history in the spring of 2000.
Damany has received numerous national awards, including a Society of Professional Journalists first place award for his work in a breast cancer documentary entitled "A Battle With Breast Cancer," and a second place award for in depth sports coverage.
Damany is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, Society of Professional Journalists, the Screen Actors Guild and Florida A&M National Alumni Association.
In his spare time he enjoys exercising, watching any sport imaginable, cooking, and writing poetry. Damany hopes to one day write his own book of poetry.
