Mayport Carrier

WJXT Editorial by John Rafferty, Aired November 20, 2008

For years, we heard it was a possibility. And now it's actually going to happen. The Secretary of the Navy says a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier will be stationed at Naval Station Mayport. It's expected to arrive in five years. The predictions...it will boost our local economy by bringing 3,000 military personnel and hundreds of millions of dollars to the Jacksonville area. Mayport has been without a carrier since the decommissioning of the USS John F. Kennedy in 2007. Channel 4 salutes our congressional delegation who lobbied the Navy to make this a reality.

I'm John Rafferty. Tell us what you think.
