Winterling Takes New Role At WJXT

POSTED: Thursday, April 23, 2009

After 47 years as chief meteorologist at Channel 4, George Winterling is writing the next chapter in his life and a new role at the television station where he helped invent television weather forecasting.

By taking the role of severe weather and hurricane expert, Winterling is stepping away from daily forecasting, but not leaving the local station.

The position will allow Winterling to spend more time with his wife, Virginia, his grandchildren, his friends, his dog and, of course, his garden.

"From the simpler days of the middle 20th century to the advances and technologies of the 21st century, I've had a whirlwind ride through my career in meteorology, the emergence of WJXT as the local station, and the opportunities I've had in sharing my environmental and gardening experiences," Winterling said. "I am grateful to Channel 4 for this opportunity to spend more time with my family while continuing to provide a service to the multitudes of people that enjoy living in this corner of the world."

Because of his passion for weather and friendship with the other members of WJXT's weather team, Winterling will occasionally fill in so John Gaughan, Richard Nunn and Rebecca Barry can take some well-deserved time off. He will also continue contributing his George's Garden segments and will continue to make community appearances.

Tribute to George
Channel 4 invites everyone to a special 30 minutes of celebration, reminiscing and some surprises: "Tribute To George Winterling" airs June 6 at 7:30 p.m.
Beyond being a household name, Winterling has met tens of thousands of people in the community over the years through public appearances and school visits. Some students that got a visit from Winterling a generation ago now have children of their own who are getting to meet him.

Among his numerous career highlights, Winterling was the only local weathercaster to accurately predict Hurricane Dora coming ashore near Jacksonville in 1964.

"After nearly five decades of helping the people of Jacksonville through his innovative weather forecasts, George Winterling deserves to write the next chapter of his life," said Bob Ellis, WJXT 's vice president and general manager. "We are thrilled he’s decided he wants the next chapter to include continuing to forecast weather on Channel 4."

Winterling isn't stepping into the new position until late May, so there'll be weeks of special and fun events to give the viewers and his coworkers a chance to congratulate him.

Knowing that viewers will have many memories, stories and well wishes for Winterling, a discussion is available on News4Jax.com where people can share their thoughts and read those of others:
