Is Pledging Allegiance To America In Spanish Offensive?

WJXT Editorial By Ann Sutton

POSTED: Wednesday, April 19, 2006

Channel 4 management takes a couple of minutes of air time each week to comment on some issue in the community. Today, we want to talk about something that happened here at WJXT last week.

Every day on Channel 4's news at noon and on the morning show, the station features different schools and groups reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

One day, we showed the pledge presented by a group of students from a St. Augustine High School Spanish class.

Around the building, we thought this was impressive -- the class of Americans was showing respect for their country in a language they learned in school.

But many viewers disagreed, and wanted to set us straight.

E-mails poured in with comments like this:
  • "I was very disheartened and disgusted."
  • "This is America. The pledge was written in English and needs to stay that way. Your airing was very distasteful to those of us who respect our flag and country."
  • "My heart was breaking to think you would do such a thing when the country is having so many problems with this issue."

Those passionate to write or call us all thought that airing the pledge in Spanish was inappropriate. Is that the prevailing feeling of our community?

The station wants to hear from more viewers on this the issue, so please take a few seconds to answer a survey on the question.
