Conflicting reports in the death of a teenager, shot and killed outside this Westside home... And a family divided after his stepmother's arrest. 3 Good evening. Today, Jacksonville police released a report -- detailing what may have happened to Bryan Layfield on Sunday, when he was found dead from a gunshot wound. In that report-- his stepmother gave police two different stories. Christy Files first told police, Layfield was shot...then said, Layfield accidentally shot himself. Files is now behind bars on charges of tampering with evidence. Channel 4's Marques White talked to police, as well as the teen's family and joins us now live from police headquarters. Marques? 3 3 3 That family is just devastated by what happened. They say the boy's mother just arrived in Jacksonville from Georgia today. The young boy was just getting ready to really start enjoying his summer. But now after this shooting his family is making funeral arrangements. 3 0022-24A police report released today -- says 15- year-old Bryant Layfield was shot accidentally-but it's not clear by whom.092221 DILLON: IT HURTS. IT HURTS BAD.The boy's stepmother -- 29- year-old Christy Files initially told police someone shot the boy outside of the home, and she saw two men running off. But when taken in for further questioning, Files told detectives the shooting happened inside the house.092140 DILLON HE WAS A GOOD KID. HE'S ALWAYS DONE GOOD IN SCHOOL.092157 DILLON HE LIKED SCHOOL. WENT PLAYED FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL.HE'D DO ANYTHING FOR ANYBODY. After the shooting -- investigators found a bloody .22 caliber rifle in the attic of the home. According to the police report, Files "admitted that the victim was accidentally shot" She also "admitted to putting the firearm in the attic to hide the evidence from the police." "She then made up the story that the victim was shot by unknown suspects fleeing..." JSO, though, is still working the case as a homicide, and says Bryant did not shoot himself. Family members don't understand the allegations and are just thinking about Layfield who they say loved to do anything outdoors. 092211 DILLON: HE WAS JUST ALL ABOUT SKATEBOARDING AND HAVING A GOOD TIME.And now they're preparing to say goodbye. 092249 DILLON: THAT'S WHAT WE'RE GONNA MISS. WE AIN'T GONNA BE ABLE TO GO TAKE HIM FISHING NO MORE. The boy's uncle Mark Barber says the boy's father is currently in jail on unrelated charges -- and that it's expected that the father will be released from jail tomorrow. He just learned what happened to his son. 091518 MARK: IT CRUSHED HIM.Meanwhile Files is charged with evidence tampering. She's being held on 50-thousand dollars bond -- and she has a court appearance set for early July. 3 A spokesperson for the Department of Children and Families tells us three other children were living in the home with Layfield.DCF is arranging counseling for those children and they're staying with another relative.
