3-year-old girl hit by car on Northside

Child hospitalized with life-threatening injuries

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 3-year-old girl was hit by a car on the Northside on Thursday afternoon, according to Jacksonville police.

Khelis Brown was taken to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, police said. They said she was unresponsive at the scene.

Rescuers were called to the crash near the Kendall Court Apartments in the 10500 block of Lem Turner Road at Capper Road about 3 p.m.

Police said the girl's grandfather was walking her across the street.

"As they reached the median, right now we believe the child was released from the grandfather and told to cross the street," said Detective Brian Blaquiere, of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

He said that's when the child was struck by a southbound car.

All southbound traffic on Lem Turrner was closed due to the crash until just before 6 p.m.

Police said their investigation is ongoing.
