Atlantic Boulevard reopens after water main break

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The eastbound and westbound lanes of Atlantic Boulevard between St. Johns Bluff Road and Kernan Boulevard are now open after a water main break Thursday afternoon.

Eastbound lanes of Atlantic were closed until water levels subside and it can be reopened. JEA said it had cut the road where it buckled and was repairing the road with asphalt. Those lanes will reopen after that.

JEA said it was digging up the water main in the westbound lanes and hoped to have it passable by Thursday night.

The 6-inch water main was broken about 1 p.m. when a contractor drilled into the main. JEA said it's still trying to figure out what the contractor was digging for.

Jacksonville police are asking drivers to avoid Atlantic Boulevard until further notice. Water is now back in in that area.
