JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Department of Transportation has launched 22 new cameras along Jacksonville roadways to help travelers plan ahead.
The cameras and eight dynamic message signs will provide real-time traffic video along the Interstate 295 East Beltway. They begin at Atlantic Boulevard and go north toward the Interstate 95 interchange.
The signs will also display crash information and lane closures.
"They know they're going to be delayed, and that gives them a chance to take alternate routes," said Peter Vega, of FDOT.
FDOT hopes travelers will use the tools to manage the increased traffic during the holidays. AAA reports more than 92 million people will travel during the holiday season.
FDOT is encouraging drivers to use the Florida 511 app, available for Android and Apple smartphones. On the app or using the FDOT website, users can watch any of the new 22 cameras for any wrecks or delays. Users can also check out travel times for stretches of highway.
FDOT plans to complete the project by adding more cameras along the I-295 East Beltway south of Atlantic Boulevard to help with commuters from the beaches and college areas in the future.
