FHP: 1 person killed in crash on JTB

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – One person died late Thursday afternoon in a wreck that blocked J. Turner Butler Boulevard and backed up traffic on other Southside roads for hours.

The Florida Highway Patrol says eastbound traffic was stopped waiting for a backup at the exit for Hodges Boulevard about 5:15 p.m. when a Ford F-250 driven by 53-year-old Dann Lute ran into the back of a Toyota 4Runner.

Troopers said the SUV overturned and hit the back of a Jaguar, which ran into a Chevrolet Silverado. The driver of the SUV, 47-year-old Darryl Early, of Avondale, La., died at the scene.

According to the FHP report, alcohol is suspected as a factor and charges are pending.

All eastbound lanes of Butler Boulevard and the Interstate 295 eastbound exit ramp to JTB were closed until about 9 p.m. Traffic on Hodges, Kernan and Beach boulevards was congested through the evening because of the wreck.
